David Roddy - GTM Engineer

I've been a GTM Engineer my entire career - the title just took a while to catch up.

My obsession has always been two things: bleeding edge technology and the most efficient way to do things (read: laziest). That combination turned out to be pretty useful.

The first chunk of my career was spent learning the fundamentals: systems, funnels, TAMs, ICPs, the psychology behind why people actually buy. Then in 2019 I got let loose at a start-up to put it all into practice. Two staff (me and the MD), and that company went on to raise £several million in VC funding and grew to 20 people. All built on the foundations I'd designed. Covid did what Covid did, but by that point I was hooked.

While that was unravelling I started helping other Manchester start-ups, voluntarily at first, auditing, designing and rebuilding their revenue systems. I helped companies grow. Simple as that.

I eventually formalised things into a Ltd, and for my first proper clients I said: give me 20% of the first two deals these processes close. I was entering new sectors, new markets, going international... I wanted skin in the game.

That ended up being significantly more than I should have charged, took me across Europe, and confirmed the model worked.

The experiment was complete.

Since then I've run hundreds of campaigns, helped generate £millions in pipeline and revenue, and done all the unglamorous stuff most people avoid: data hygiene, CRM audits/merges, getting the foundations right before throwing budget at growth.

Early clients went on to win Disney, BAE Systems, Raytheon, BBC, IPG Mediabrands and American Express. One seeing 560% AOV growth inside a year.

I'm a Clay Certified Expert, part of HubSpot's Solutions Partner programme, and have more HubSpot certifications than anybody cares about but real experience is what got me here, not credentials.

I typically come in post-PMF (product market fit), when a founder is ready to stop being the entire sales team. That's where this all gets interesting.
